Coverage after service
Coverage Options That Fit Life After Service.
Veterans have different coverage needs. Some are protecting a spouse, others want to plan for final expenses, and some are reviewing coverage after leaving the military.
A licensed independent insurance professional can help compare available private insurance options based on your situation.
- 01
Final Expense Protection
Smaller permanent policies meant to help pay for a funeral, final medical bills, and other costs at the end of life, so they don’t fall to your family.
- 02
Whole Life & Permanent Coverage
Coverage designed to last your lifetime as long as premiums are paid. Many whole life policies keep level premiums and build cash value over time.
- 03
Term Life & Family Protection
Coverage for a set number of years, such as 10, 20, or 30. Often used to protect a spouse, children, a mortgage, or income during working years.
Underwriting, eligibility, benefits, premiums, and waiting periods vary by policy and insurer.

Do veterans automatically have life insurance through the VA?
Not usually. Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) generally ends 120 days after separation unless it’s converted, for example to Veterans’ Group Life Insurance (VGLI) within the deadline. VA also offers VA Life Insurance (VALife) to certain veterans with service-connected disabilities. Each program has its own eligibility rules, limits, and deadlines, so check with VA directly. We are not part of VA. A licensed agent can look at private options alongside any coverage you already have.
Can I apply if I have health conditions?
Often, yes. Some policies ask a few health questions, and some final expense policies ask none at all. Those usually have a waiting period, often two years, before the full benefit is paid for death from natural causes. What’s available depends on your health, age, state, and the insurer.
Are there options without a medical exam?
Yes, many policies don’t require a medical exam. They may still ask health questions and check prescription and medical information databases. Coverage amounts and premiums can differ from fully underwritten policies.
Can coverage begin immediately?
Some policies provide full coverage from the day the policy takes effect, once the insurer approves it and the first premium is paid. Others limit the benefit for an initial period. Whether day-one coverage is available to you depends on your health answers and the insurer’s decision.
Will someone call me?
Yes. A licensed insurance professional will contact you about your request, usually by phone, to understand your needs and answer questions. You can say you prefer a text first, and you can ask us to stop contacting you at any time.
Is the review free?
Yes. The review costs nothing and there’s no obligation to buy. If you choose a policy, you pay its premium to the insurance company.
